Construct your very own Plastic Model Airplane

Have you ever wanted to construct your very own airplane?

Airplane model hobbyists prefer to build their model airplanes. This is because it is more challenging to build your own airplane models and it gives you a sense of fulfillment watching your creation come to life.

The construction of a plastic model airplane is easy. All you need is a hobby tool kit and a little time and effort.

Here are the tools you need to construct a plastic model airplane:

•     Measuring tools – You need a selection of plastic rulers. You will use the plastic rulers for constructing a model airplane as obviously as a measuring device. Besides measuring, you will also use the plastic rulers for tracing, and adding details to your airplane model.

Remember that rulers are an important tool when constructing plastic model airplane. You will need it for measuring plans and calculate scales from a reference photograph.

•     Edged tools – This tool is usually called a hobby knife. It is one of the most important tools to use when building your plastic model airplane. It is wise that you should have a different set of blades and handles.

The U-shaped razor saw is another type of edged tool. This is for heavy modifications to your plastic model airplane kit.

•     Clamping tools – There are many types of clamps that can be useful when building your plastic model airplane. The standard clamps are useful for holding parts together for gluing and painting. Standard tweezers are very useful for handling small pieces of your plastic model airplanes for painting. You can also use masking tapes, rubber bands, clothespins and paper clips for clamping.

•     Other tools needed for building plastic model airplanes are airbrushes for painting smoothly on the plane, paint for color, tube cement, liquid cement and super glue to join the parts of the plastic model airplane, and a miniature power drill and bits. With a power drill, you can create an impression of machine gun hits on the sides of your plane.

Now that you have the tools needed you can now begin constructing your plastic model airplane. Firstly, you have to determine what type of airplane you want. Look for the particular model you want your plastic model airplane to look, like in plane building reference books. Study how the process of making an airplane.

Here are the steps that many plane builders usually take:

•     Building the interior (cockpit, instrument panels, seat, control yoke etc.) – Here you need to acquire photographs of the real cockpit to ensure the details are accurate.

•     Fuselage construction, seaming and sanding – In this part, you will construct the fuselage of the plane, glue together wings and tails to the fuselage.

•     Miniature electric motor installation – This is optional, but if you want to make your plastic model airplane you can install electric motors for lights, and propellers, you can also add a smoke generator to simulate damage.

•     Priming and Painting – Painting the plane is the most important part of detailing. Look at the photograph reference and copy it as much as possible to make it look realistic. Before painting, apply masking tape to cover the interior and the motors.

•     Applying decals and stickers – Decals and stickers can further enhance the airplane. Decals like the seal of the air force and plane numbers.

•     Finishing – Verify that the paint, decals, and other details are accurate. Remove the masking tapes and spray a coat of glossy or flat finish to your model airplane.

It is great if you install motors and LED lights to the model. It will further enhance the model airplane and make it look more realistic. It is also a good idea to include working landing gears, flaps and other minor details.
