Airplane Model Kits: Constructing Your Own Airplane Model

What can be more fun than constructing your own model airplane and flying it?

It can be a great activity while spending time with your kids. You will get a sense of fulfillment once you see the model airplane you built actually take flight.

With a little time and practice, you will surely get your model airplane to fly.

In fact, many model airplane hobbyists prefer to construct their planes than buying it whole. It is usually more fun and they can design it the way they exactly want it to be.

Making your own airplane model allows you to customize your plane with an airplane kit by changing the engines. You can make it faster and more fuel-efficient if you want to.

There are different types of kits and construction for airplane models. Different kits require different types of assembly, budget and level of skill and experience of the airplane model hobbyists.

There are kits made of foam and plastic and some kits are of balsa wood. The construction process requires the assembly of spars and ribs for the tail and wing surfaces for the fuselage of the model airplane.

A more solid design uses stronger and solid sheets of wood to form the basic structures of the plane. You can also use composite wings that are more solid and lighter than wood like expanded polystyrene core covered in protective veneer of wood. This type of design is called obechi.

You can also use carbon fiber or Kevlar equipments to reinforce the strength of your model airplane to make it more resistible in case of a bad landing or crash.

Flying model airplanes are designed in the same principles used in a real aircraft. As a result, assembly and construction is very different from static airplane models. RC model airplanes use techniques applied from real vintage aircraft.

There are different types of airplane model kits available in the market, here are a few types of them:

•     Ready To Fly Kits – These type of airplanes are pre-assembled that usually only requires you to attach the wings and other basic assembly. Everything you need to construct a flying airplane is included in the kit.

These types of model airplanes have the ability to fly for a few minutes and have eliminated the complicated processes of building a model airplane.

If you are a beginner and want to experience building a flying model airplane, this kit is right for you.

•     Almost Ready To Fly Kit – These kits are somewhat similar to the Ready to Fly kits, however it usually requires more assembly and other types require basic construction. Standard Almost Ready to Fly kits can be built in less than 4 hours of labor depending on the details and stickers you want to put in to obtain the desired results.

This kit will usually separate the motor, servos, speed controller and control rods to maximize your choice. This is an advantage for this type of kit. You will have the choice of choosing how your RC model airplanes will perform.

•     Balsa Kit – These types of kit vary from skill levels of the builder. It requires cutting by die cut or laser. The laser cut kits are more expensive but have more precision when it comes to cutting the balsa wood, while the die-cut can work almost as good as the laser kit with a little sanding, and use of basic engineering principle.

Many hours are needed to complete a plane with this kit and require adequate skill in construction. A mistake can lead to compromise your model airplanes airworthiness.

•     From Scratch – If you know how a plane works, the basic principles of aerodynamics, and a little construction knowledge, you can create your own plane from scratch. All you need is to buy accessories, like motors and stickers or decals for the plane.

Depending on your skill level, you can construct your own flying model airplane. The Ready to Fly kits are great for beginners, especially for kids, for model airplane construction. You can also move on to a more complicated construction as you gain experience in airplane building.
