The Truth About Airplane Model Kits

There are many people that are very much obsessed with miniature aircrafts or airplanes models. They are obsessed for reasons that can never be fully explained. They are actually obsessed with the real airplanes, but the models provide them with the satisfaction of actually owning one, albeit in a smaller scale.

Airplane models are tiny airplanes that are often miniature versions of the real planes. Making and constructing airplane models is considered as a hobby that has been popular since the start of the thirties of the last century.

In making and constructing these small and impressive model airplanes, the common materials used are foam, balsa wood and fiber glass or plastic. There are many possible designs available of the number of planes out today. It may range from extremely plain gliders to vastly complex airplane models and some models that can be humongous and accurate down to the bolts.

Making airplane models are made possible through airplane model kits which are set of parts or materials that needs to be assembled. There are vastly different airplane model kits that are available in the market. Many of these airplane model kits are highly specialized and are made especially to those who love and have high enthusiasm for airplanes and their models.

Airplane model kits are available in two major classifications, the static non- flying airplane model kits and the flying airplane model kits.

Static non-flying airplane model kits are those that are not really made for flying. They are commonly made for displays only. These static non-flying airplane model kits are commonly made from detailed plastic segments, brass and wires that are photo etched. Other materials are also used such as metal, woods and paper.

Some of the static non-flying airplane model kits are created to be utilized in wind tunnels for testing, where the data found is used to develop real airplanes or aircraft and find their faults and problems.

Collectors can choose airplane model kits made from either plastic or die cast materials in producing commercial and military planes and helicopters. For those less experienced collectors, they can have snap commercial and military airplane model kits. Snap airplane model kits are have grown in popularity because it is easy to construct.

The flying airplane model kits are classified into three main groups, the radio- controlled airplanes; free flight and control line.

The radio-controlled airplanes has a transmitter operated by a pilot on the ground that send signals to a receiver in the model airplane. The free flight airplane model kits are designed and built in a manner that allows the airplane to fly without any attachment to the ground. And the control line airplane model kits are designed and built to be flown using cables leading from the wing to the pilot.

The most popular among all airplane model kits are the plastic airplane model kits. Plastic airplane model kits are commonly produced in a standard scale that shows the connection between the size of the model and the actual size of the airplane or aircraft. These scales are 1/ 144, 1/ 72, 1/ 49 and 1/ 32.

Because producing molded airplane model kits are quite expensive, there are only few manufactures of injection-molded plastic models. Those smaller manufacturers only produce models of unpopular subjects and accessories to augment the mainstream kits.

Low quality moldings, vacuum formed plastics and resin castings are used by smaller manufactures to cut production costs in the production of airplane model kits in order to avoid large cost.

Many of the famous and even those that are not famous of the world’s airlines allow people to model their fleet airplanes and aircraft in order to gain publicity.
